Description of Optical Delay Line

In order to improve the ability of anti-interference, resolution, and recognition, as well as solve the problem of multi-target imaging, phased array radar must have as much instantaneous bandwidth as possible; in order to solve the problem of limiting the instantaneous bandwidth of signal caused by aperture effect, the optical delay line is often used for delay compensation.

The traditional coaxial delay line, surface acoustic wave delay line, and charge-coupled device can not meet the high-resolution requirements of the radar system. Now optical delay technology is used, and the most common and mature technology is the application of optical fiber delay line. NEON uses this most mature optical fiber delay technology to meet the modern high-resolution requirements of radar systems.

Internally, the RF signal is converted to an optical signal and transmitted over a fiber optic link to the receiver and provides the proper signal delay time.

Working Principle of Optical Delay Technology

The fiber-optical delay line integrates transmitter, receiver, and a long length of fiber in a single package. In the transmitter, the input signal modulates the light output from a semiconductor laser diode, which is then focused on a fiber optic cable. This fiber carries the modulated optical signal to the receiver, which then reconverts the optical signal back to the original electrical RF signal. Depending on the needs of customers, amplifiers are sometimes added to the output.
